G U S goes to the Z O O

For all his hard work in Tomatis Therapy this week and because he says "happy birthday" so sweetly, we headed for the Greenville Zoo today on a whim and with nary a plan (scribbled directions from Google Maps which was the only mistake of the day).
Gus was so excited to go the playground OUTSIDE the zoo that I had to sort of coax him in to see some animals.

But he loved the Elephants. We counted them, we watched them eat, poop and take a shower.

Then we took a break and played at the playground INSIDE the zoo, where we stayed three times as long as we did in any of the exhibits - but the constant action delivered by over-sugared, over-excited kids was pretty fascinating - and the rocking chairs provided for weary parents, made for some great people watching.

Gus did spend a good amount of time talking to "Mr. Alligator" who was sunning himself and seemingly unimpressed by Gus' imploring.

In typical Gus fashion - we paid $12 to see exotic animals and he REALLY loved the chicken in the farm exhibit. Everyone was trying to feed them Graham Crackers and was very surprised that they were VERY interested in Gus' grass - atta boy, he knows his chickens.

After an hour in the zoo. We ate a picnic lunch (well I did, Gus snacked in spurts) and played for 2 1/2 hours in the adjacent playground (which may be the world's greatest playground, at least from my perspective) Nice and safe and completely overrun on a sunny Saturday, Gus had a great time mingling under the thoughtfully provided sun-sail, while I baked away at the periphery - I think I might have a slight sun-stroke.

After I snapped this picture, we packed up and left. Gus didn't even make it out of the parking lot. His head was lolling by the time I was buckling him in.

Birthday Party!

For my birthday this year, my girlfriends indulged me - well three of them did anyways - and ran up Looking Glass with me (we don't know the distance and are hazy on how long it took us, but it's far, steep and way cool when you get to the top), while the remaining loyal friends came to my house, took care of Gus and cooked me a wonderful birthday dinner, complete with Pina Coladas!

The Quesadillas, salad and beans were wonderful! Thank you all you spieces!

Then they crowned me Miss Daisy (not because I'm old) and gave me the gift of one accupuncture session. I'm excited to actually try it out.
This was a great birthday! Thanks to everyone who called, wrote, e-mailed and just sent thoughts my way.

Happy birthday to me.

My day to be selfish.
A tall latte and a cranberry-walnut muffin.
An hour of uninterrupted reading of the New York Times.
Happy Birthday to me!

Happy almost-birthday to me!

Jacob just dazzled me with a lovely home-cooked dinner and the Piece-de-resistance was a peach cobbler (a recipe from his camp days, VERY simple, it involves canned peaches and yellow cake mix) in my BRAND-NEW Dutch Oven (my present)...
...all was dandy until we realized that the rubber top knob on the lid doesn't like to be broiled (don't ask me why my husband thought the broiling setting was appropriate with the lid ON)
...
so now Mr. Firefighter is off to get the fans from the firestation because our house smells
like a toxic waste dump....

...
I didn't need candles...this is WAY MORE FUN!
We had a great time watching sun set.

My guys

Just a quick shot - yup this pictoresque spot is just minutes of walking from our home - to remind myself of the biggest gift in my life (hint, there is a VERY IMPORTANT BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK)
My guys.
I love them.
I love the ease with which they are together.
The few words they need to communicate.
They are so special.

Happy Easter

The Easter Bunny came early (again) because Gus will be spending Easter Morning with a new sitter, so here is a picture of what the sugar-induced coma after finding his Easter Basket looks like.
He recovered nicely though, partially because the only candy in there were a few Hershey's Kisses and a big lollipop (ENORMOUS) that we are saving for a special occasion.
He loves the Crocs, didn't care for the Etch-A-Sketch and was so-so about the rubber duckie (eventhough he insisted he wanted one based on a book not too long ago)
He is a bit anxious/excited about the new Veggie Tales. We'll take it slow with that one.
Overall Easter was good in our house. Sandwiches on the porch. Blowing bubbles and simply basking in the sunshine.

Chicks!

Look what the Easter Bunny brought us! Chicks! This one is Gus' favorite. Her name is Fin (beats me I don't know where he came up with that name, but that is her name. The other one is named Vic, and gets a lot less face time with Gus. I love on that one.

So far Fin and Gus have been bonding very gently. We try very hard to give them enough rest.

Yesterday evening, Gus wanted to take them both to bed with him, which means he loves them. Only his favorite toys get to go to bed with him.

Needless to say we braved a couple of tears and kept the chicks in their bin instead.
